Baby is
about the size of a large winter squash or small pumpkin
19.5 inches · 6.5 lbs
Baby this week
- •Lungs are nearly fully mature and ready for breathing air
- •Vernix (protective coating) is shedding off as baby prepares for birth
- •Head may be engaging deeper into the pelvis (though some babies wait until labor)
- •Baby is practicing breathing movements and has a strong suck reflex
You this week
- •Increased pressure and heaviness in the pelvis and lower back
- •More frequent Braxton Hicks contractions that may feel stronger
- •Difficulty sleeping due to size and needing frequent bathroom trips
- •Possible lightening (baby dropping) which may ease breathing but increase pelvic pressure
- •Increased vaginal discharge (bloody show may appear soon)
This week's tips
- •Start timing any contractions you feel to get familiar with their pattern—this information will be valuable for your care team
- •Practice your comfort positions for labor and birth; many people find hands-and-knees, side-lying, or upright positions helpful
- •Ensure your hospital bag is fully packed and accessible; keep your phone charger nearby
- •Discuss your birth preferences and any last-minute questions with your care provider at your appointment
- •Get rest when you can—even if sleep feels impossible, lying down and resting benefits you both
- •Eat nourishing, easy-to-digest meals and stay hydrated; your body needs fuel for what's ahead

Looking ahead
You're in the home stretch now. In the coming weeks, labor could begin anytime, so it's wise to finalize your birth plan, arrange childcare or support, and trust your body's readiness. Most babies arrive between weeks 37-42, and your care team will continue monitoring to ensure the safest outcome for you and your baby.
